The key word in the month of April is workmanship, some other Bible versions use words such as masterpiece or handiwork instead of workmanship. This month as we allow rest in the hands of the Potter, we acknowledge that he shall mould us and create us into masterpieces. There is a Japanese art of repairing ceramics called Kintsugi, or Kintsukuroi, literally “golden repair,” When a ceramic becomes chipped or broken after using it over time, instead of throwing them away the Japanese repairs them traditionally with varnish and gold, leaving a gold seam where the cracks were.
The technique consists in joining fragments and giving them a new, more refined aspect. Every repaired piece is unique, because of the randomness with which ceramics shatters and the irregular patterns formed that are enhanced with the use of metals. Every repaired piece is unique, the “scars” become part of the design creating a unique piece of art. This practice enhances the breaks creating a beautiful piece of art which becomes even more beautiful than the first.
Like these broken beautiful vessels, when we are God’s workmanship, we become better. We are made by his hands to His preconceived idea of whom He want us to. In other words, we are wholly the result of God’s creative, redemptive, and sanctifying work though we may be broken and marred at the beginning. this month we are celebrating ourselves despite whom we are, we are masterpieces, not in the eyes of men but in the Hands of the greater potter, the almighty God.
We are God’s workmanship in that He created us. Everything God creates is of value, yet nothing in creation compares to His work in creating mankind (Genesis 2:7). We are more than Kintsugi we are created perfect his own MASTERPIECE. however, even if we are broken, we are recreated for His glory.
