Broken to Be Remade (Lent)

In the third month, we focus on Jeremiah 18:4. The potter had clay in His hand and was working on it. He had a vision for the intended shape in mind, but the clay was marred. The key word “marred” has a host of synonyms that can fully describe what happened to the clay: spoiled, ruined, impaired, disfigured, flawed, blemished, scarred, mutilated, defaced, deformed, upset, damaged, wrecked, harmed, hurt, blighted, tainted, tarnished, stained, polluted, or vitiated.

The temptation for any well-meaning person would be to give up on the project. The clay could be seen as poor and unusable. Yet, God did not discard it—He reworked and remolded it into a different vessel. He did not give up on its purpose. He still saw the beauty in the marred clay. It was still of great use and had potential.

Its potential, however, depended on the hands of the potter. When He worked on it, He remade it into the most beautiful vessel.

This month, as we consider that we are the clay, we must admit and acknowledge our brokenness and state of helplessness. Then we must believe that God is our potter, our creator, and place our lives in His hands to be remade. To yield to the power of God as He reshapes us, we must open our hearts to Him in humility and repentance. As we reflect on the potter’s work, we must consider our responsibility in being remade into the final figure God desires of us. The maker is working in the wheel of our lives—our health, families, businesses, and jobs. As these keep moving as a wheel in our lives, we must yield the brokenness in them and allow God to work on them.

Remaking can be painful and uncomfortable, but we must be willing to accept the new design from the great creator.

This is the season of being remade.
