God, Our Hope

Preacher: Rev James Muriithi Kaniaru
Message: God, Our Hope
Readings: Psalms 42:1-11, Romans 5:1-5

There are psalms which are sang when one is happy and others when one is unhappy.
Psalms 42 is one Psalm which was sung when the singer was unhappy.
There are things that the singer makes known to us. One is that you can be happy even when you are alone. While you cannot be happy in loneliness.
God desires us to have moments when we will be alone meditating on him and thus create a better relationship with God.
It is therefore important to set aside time to go to solitary places such as the mountains to have a quiet time with God.
Being alone and loneliness are two different things.
You can be lonely even when you are in the midst of people.
The singer in Psalm 42 finds himself in such a situation.
There are times especially in the old age when people became lonely as their children are grown up and may be living in different places away from home.
People are also experiencing loneliness following divorce while others experience loneliness because or retirement or because of being in leadership.
Leaders go through a lot of loneliness even church ministers suffer from the same.
The writer of Psalm 42 was a leader going through loneliness and was even ridiculed.
We also find ourselves in such circumstances as believers where we are ridiculed and asked where our God is.
In Psalm 37 the Israelite were ridiculed and asked to sing unto their God the songs they used to sing.
The singer then asks his soul why it was down cast and disturbed. We also need to ask ourselves the same question.
The singer then tells himself to have his hope in God. Let us also encourage ourselves in the Lord.
Paul says he is delighted because of the hope in God which comes from suffering for a cause.
I had a talk with drunkards in a church and it occurred to my mind that I was able to talk to them because I was once a drunkard and suffered from its consequences.
Perseverance produces character which leads to hope, which does not disappoint us because it is filled with God’s love.
God is our hope even during this electioneering period when we support different political parties
Let us have hope in God even when we serve him as he is a good God.
Challenges are part of life but God comes to us and we are not defeated.
God will see you through whatever is causing loneliness in your life. Have hope in God.

Psalm 42

1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One[d]
with shouts of joy and praise
among the festive throng.
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
6 My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
7 Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.
8 By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.
9 I say to God my Rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?”
10 My bones suffer mortal agony
as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

Romans 5:1-5

Peace and Hope
5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.

5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
